Life Drawing in Watercolor and Graphite

September 4, 2011/in Courses/by tja

Course Update, October 10, 2011

Two places left.

“Drawing the Nude” is a course for those interested in the following:

  1. Train and develop their hand at figure drawing;
  2. Share with others their challenges and solutions;
  3. Participate in a critical analysis of the work at the end of each session.

A model is present for the duration of the course.  This past Spring the medium of choice was conte’ and colored paper, but this Fall I’d like to focus on watercolor and water-soluble graphite.

Course Synthesis

  • Level: Beginner and Intermediate
  • Medium: Varies
  • Total Number of Hours: 20
  • Total Number of Lessons: 10 lessons, 2 hours each
  • Dates: To Be Determined… please see below
  • Total Number of Students: max 5
  • Languages: English and Italian
  • Location: Via Cardinale Merry del Val, 18 at the La Bottega dell’Artista (Trastevere)
  • Cost: €300 which includes the model fees.  Materials are not included.

*Materials

The list of materials will be published the week before classes begin and will be available at The Bottega dell’Artista.  I would budget about €30 for materials.

Before taking this course, here’s what you need to know:

  • 1. 40% of the cost guarantees your place, the remaining 60% is to be paid the week before the start of the course.  The cost is non-refundable.  If you should not be able to continue the course after starting, the best solution is to find someone to take your place.
  • 2. There are no “make up classes.” If you miss a lesson, you miss a lesson.

September 4, 2011/in Courses/by tja

Course Update, October 10, 2011

This course is now full.

What makes a Rembrandt a Rembrandt?  How much is it the”what”?  And how much is it the “how”?

Join me on an expedition of technical analysis and philosophical inquiry into what makes a Rembrandt portrait such a marvel of light and form.  Using Ernst van de Wetering’s book, “Rembrandt: The Painter at Work” as our principle point of reference, we’ll discuss and explore Rembrandt’s palette, medium, materials, subject matter and anecdotes.

Further, in the process of preparing our own attempt at a “Rembrandt-esque” self-portrait, we’ll also develop a copy of one of Rembrandt’s own self-portraits.

None at all… but you do need to bring your own materials.

What materials should I bring?
Well, I’ll take with me the following:

  • – French Easel;

  • – Brushes;
  • – Canvas or a canvas stretched over a board (I’ll probably have the latter);
  • – Wet wipes – great for cleaning brushes and hands!
  • – A hat
  • – An umbrella (for rain or shade!)

Where will we paint?
We’ll leave from my studio at 3:30 and walk up to a beautiful park just two minutes away.

Where is your studio?
I thought you’d never ask!  It’s Via San Cipriano 14 in Balduina, just across from the Appiano station.  (Google Map below the contact form…)
