Muses and Mirrors is a variation on the previous oil portrait course and is designed for those who have never painted a portrait before… but have always wanted to learn.  This course addresses the following principles: universal proportions of the head, scale, composition, edge, color value, color temperature and the modeling of paint to create a three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional surface.  The subjects are a bust of the muse Thalia and you (yes, a self-portrait).

The list of materials will be published the week before classes begin and will be available at The Bottega dell’Artista.  I would budget between €70 and €120 for materials.

Free Workshop: Painting the Landscape Alla Prima

Join me for a free workshop on landscape panting Saturday May 14th and/or Sunday May 15th from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.

Prior to the workshop, I will hold an open studio from 12:30 to 3:30.  See this page for more info.

Now, I bet you are asking yourself a few questions:

What’s the catch?
None at all… but you do need to bring your own materials.

What materials should I bring?
Well, I’ll take with me the following:

  • – French Easel;
  • – Oil Paints;
  • – Walnut Oil (medium)
  • – Brushes;
  • – Canvas or a canvas stretched over a board (I’ll probably have the latter);
  • – Wet wipes – great for cleaning brushes and hands!
  • – A hat
  • – An umbrella (for rain or shade!)

Where will we paint?
We’ll leave from my studio at 3:30 and walk up to a beautiful park just two minutes away.

Where is your studio?
I thought you’d never ask!  It’s Via San Cipriano 14 in Balduina, just across from the Appiano station.  (Google Map below the contact form…)

Per discutere insieme di pittura…e non solo…ti invito a visitare il mio nuovo studio nei seguenti giorni:

Nei giorni 14 e 15, dopo la visita allo studio, seguira’ un workshop gratuito di pittura ad olio del paesaggio aperto a TUTTI (principianti, intermedi ed avanzati). Se sei interessato a partecipare al workshop, iscriviti subito!

Altrimenti, unisciti a me lunedi’ 16 per trascorrere del tempo in studio e gustare insieme un aperitivo.

Come raggiungere lo studio

L’indirizzo e’ Via San Cipriano 14 (zona Balduina), appena di fronte alla stazione Appiano (vedi sotto la mappa Google).

Quindi, se sali sul treno metropolitano FR3 (Roma Ostiense-Cesano-Viterbo) che da Ostiense va a Trastevere e poi a San Pietro e ancora Valle Aurelia…Appiano e’ la stazione successiva!

Oppure, prendi l’autobus 990 e scendi alla fermata Appiano-Lattanzio.

The “Principles of Drawing” tackles the challenges of Line, Mass, Composition, Proportion and Value; the building blocks for any determined draftsman; the foundation necessary for any aspiring painter. “Painting the Classical Figure” offers the intermediate and advanced painters the opportunity to tackle one of the principle challenges for a figurative painter: painting a full-standing nude.  In addition to composition, proportion and flesh tones, we will consider the role of the figure as allegory and look at examples through the ages.

  • – 2 Linen Canvases 30 cm x 40 cm;
  • – 5 brushes: 2 JF bull hair, 2 hog bristle, 1 sable Da Vinci.  I also recommend a bamboo brush holder;
  • – Palette and medium dish (double dish with plastic tops);
  • – Schmincke Mussini oil paints: ivory black, titanium white, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, raw umber, yellow ochre, vermilion red tone, alizarine, naples yellow.

Disegno del Nudo: Carboncino e Gessetto

Sono molto lieto di presentare una nuova serie di corsi di disegno del nudo dal vero. Ogni serie prevederà l’utilizzzo di una tecnica diversa. Partiremo con il Disegno del Nudo: Carboncino e Gessetto.

Questo corso di disegno è stato ideato per un gruppo di persone che siano interessate a:

  1. Svilluppare seriamente la tecnica del disegno;
  2. Condividere con gli altri le loro sfide e soluzioni;
  3. Analizzare criticamente, alla fine di ogni lezione, il lavoro svolto ed i progressi conseguiti.

Il Corso “Disegno del Nudo: Carboncino e Gessetto” avrà una durata di 4 lezioni di 2 ore ciascuna. Gli ultimi 30 minuti di ogni lezione saranno dedicati alla critica del lavoro. Per ogni lezione, è prevista la presenza di una modella.
