I took private drawing lessons from Tim Allen (4 sessions, 2 hours per session). I have never had formal drawing instruction. I taught myself watercolor over the past 3 years and discovered my weakness: depicting tonal values. That’s why I took drawing lessons, in this case, still life. Tim is an excellent and patient teacher. He could see immediately where I was struggling and provide advice on how to tackle these difficulties. After only 2 days I felt much more confident in approaching the complexity of a still life portrait. By the end of the four days (8 hours of instruction and drawing), I was very satisfied not just with my final drawing but with the valuable lessons I learned. I really wanted to take an art class in Rome and I was so grateful to find Tim and arrange for 3 2-hour private drawing lessons. The communication was super smooth, the studio (in the basement of an art supply store) was an easy walk from the center of Rome, the cost was totally fair. Most importantly, I learned a lot from our conversations and my drawing practice really benefitted from the project that Tim suggested based on my description of my goals. I’m an advanced beginner and I think Tim would be a great instructor for real beginners but also very advanced painters. I learned more from him in one week than I have in all the classes I’ve taken before. I came to strengthen my portrait skills and to learn how to glaze skin tone like the old renaissance masters. Why I keep coming back: I came across PADASOR about 6 years ago. I had recently moved to Italy and wanted to explore portrait painting, courses offering skills development, techniques and opportunities to meet other people. I was in Rome, afterall, the capital city of Italy, a country most famous for its art! I wasn’t disappointed and soon went from a rather scary first underpainting 😂 to completing my first oil portrait painting. For me, learning to paint and draw isn’t as simple as ‘learn the techniques in 6 lessons and off you go’; it requires practice and development, learning from mistakes and being guided through the journey. At whatever level and experience, PADASOR provides the opportunity to continue to improve skills in oil painting, drawing and even how to see! It’s a welcoming environment, where you will meet people from all over the world, have the opportunity to improve your Italian or English language skills (instruction in both languages) and form true friendships! I have seen PADASOR develop over the past few years, including through COVID, when ‘needs must’ and Tim started lessons over the internet, keeping us all painting and in contact through this most extraordinary period. I was pleased to return to the studio though, you can’t beat drawing from life and there is a buzz from working amongst and learning from others. Tim fills the space with his big personality and teaches through demonstration. The studio has expanded, with more space and a range of new courses offered, some led by different artists.
