After last semester’s focus on portrait painting ‘alla prima’, with a new portrait painted nearly every weekend, we’ll go back to spending the entire time on one portrait.  We’ll begin with the drawing and composition, transfer the drawing to the canvas, then develop the portrait set in an imaginative landscape.  To accomplish this, we’ll take inspiration from painters like Hans Memling and Leonardo da Vinci, paying careful attention to the play between the cool tones of the landscape and the warm tones of the flesh.

Required Materials

  • Wood Palette
  • 1 Palette Knife
  • Linseed oil
  • Tintorsetto (this is a substitute for turpentine.  Normal solvents are NOT ALLOWED in the studio.)
  • Medium Cup or Jar
  • Brushes:
    • 3-4 Bull Hair (Sizes 6 to 10, Filbert)
    • 3-4 Wide Short-Handle Hog Bristle (Sizes 0 to 3)
    • 3-4 Synthetic Hair (Sizes 6 to 10, Various)
  • Oil Paint:
    • Titanium White
    • Ivory Black
    • Raw Umber
    • Raw Sienna
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Cadmium Red Light or Vermilion
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Sap Green
  • Paper Towels

Figure Painting – The Male Nude

Level: Intermediate, Advanced

  • Saturday, September 17th to Saturday, December 17th, 2016
  • Time: Saturdays from 15:00 – 18:00
  • 14 lessons total, though schedule may be subject to change.
  • Cost: €40 per lesson and one-time registration fee of €50 OR €45 per lesson and no registration fee.
Model fee included / Materials not included.

Please note: the registration fee guarantees your place at an easel for the duration of the course… with the understanding that you will be attending most if not all of the lessons.  The registration fee is non-refundable.

There will be one model/pose for all 14 lessons.

For the first time in over a year we’ll return to the nude figure, this time with the model Daniel.  The focus of this class will be three-fold:

  1. Drawing of the figure.
  2. Using a limited palette.  For those who dare: my palette will be: Mars Black, Lead White, Venetian Red, Juane Brilliant and Brown Ochre.  We’ll start the painting on white canvas using Transparent Oxide Brown.
  3. Painting the flesh while thinking more about temperature than color.

Final note: I’d like each participant to bring with them a favorite painting of a male nude that might help serve as a point of reference.
