Introduction
The Real and the Ideal: Drawing from Life and Antiquity in Rome is a five-day drawing workshop for any artist interested in advancing their understanding of drawing the figure, experiencing the difference between drawing from life and drawing from ancient sculpture, and exploring how this comparison can generate ideas on technique, style and content.
Half of the workshop will be held inside the PADASOR studio which is located below the Poggi Trastevere art shop.
The other half will be spent drawing inside three of Rome’s prestigious museums:
- Centrale Montemartini
- Palazzo Massimo
- Capitoline Museums
Setting Expectations
This course offers the extraordinary opportunity to study the human figure both from the life model and sculptures from antiquity together over the course of a week. Each morning, the life model will pose in the studio where we will explore strategies for developing powerful drawings. Then in the afternoons we will sketch from masterworks of art, studying the design systems used in antiquity. The comparison of real and idealized forms will create opportunities for discussion on the eternal in art. The course will have critiques, demonstrations and discussions in a supportive environment. About Juliette Aristides
Juliette Aristides is a Seattle based painter who seeks to understand and convey the human spirit through art. Aristides exhibits nationally in dozens of one person and group shows including multiple museum exhibitions including the solo: Observations in Reading, PA and A Life’s Work at the Customs House Museum, TN. She received Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. She is the recipient of the Elisabeth Greenshields Grant and is recognized as a living master by The Art Renewal Center. She was the Director of the renowned Aristides Atelier for 25th years, the first Atelier in the Northwest. She is in dozens of magazines and authored seven books including Classical Painting Atelier and Lessons in Classical Drawing. Her newest book: The Inner Life of the Artist published by Monacelli Press, NYC spring of 2025.

Terms & Conditions
- A minimum number of 6 students is needed to run the workshop.
- The maximum number of students is 10.
- There are three payments: the first is the Registration Fee of €50. The second is the Deposit of €665. The third payment of €500 is due in cash on the day of the first lesson. Credit cards for the final payment are not accepted. No exceptions.
- The workshop will be confirmed by February 15th, 2027, or as soon as we have the minimum number.
- If the workshop sells out, we will create a Waiting List.
- The Registration Fee is non-refundable, unless the workshop is canceled on February 15th , 2027. If that happens, the Registration Fee will be reimbursed in full. If you are traveling from outside of Europe, please wait until the workshop is confirmed prior to making your travel arrangements.
- As soon as we reach the minimum number, participants will be asked to pay the Deposit. The Deposit must be paid within a week of confirmation. If not, the participant will forfeit their Registration Fee and their space will be offered to the next person on the Waiting List.
- ALL paid Deposits and Registration Fees are non-refundable and it is not possible to request a credit toward a future workshop should you be unable to attend. If you are coming from somewhere outside of Europe, we strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance.
