Velazquez Revisited: Portraits alla Prima | ||
Level / Cost | Time / Duration | Description / Materials |
Intermediate, Advanced €450 1 place available Register for this course | Saturday Mornings 11:00 - 14:00 10 Lessons, 30 hours total Starts February 11th Easter break, April 7th Ends April 21st | Carolus-Duran was once quoted as saying: "Look at the head and neck of the model as she rests! How simple it is, and how simply it might be conveyed by a true half-tone, a few stronger touches, and an accent of light on the neck. That is how Velazquez would paint it, with a mere nothing. That is how I, with rather less skill, should paint it too. "Done like that it need hardly take six minutes to paint, but done in the way some people go to work you might toil at it for six days and then not reach it. "Paint like Velazquez, gentlemen. Ah, Velazquez!" We will probably be taking more than six minutes to paint a head, but we will be painting many heads, both self-portraits and from the model. This course will encompass the following: - an examination and practice of some of the techniques taught by the ateliers of the late 19th century, in particular that of Carolus-Duran; - a series of self-portraits; - a series of portraits from a model, all "alla prima." A model will be present for part of the course. The model fee is included in the cost. This course will feature Michael Harding paints and emphasize the use of medium-sized hog bristle brushes. Materials are not included in the cost and students are responsible for acquiring the materials indicated. |
Caravaggio Part I: Flesh Illuminated |
||
Level / Cost | Time / Duration | Description / Materials |
Beginners, Intermediate €450 2 places available Register for this course | Saturday Afternoons 16:00 - 19:00 10 Lessons, 30 hours total Starts February 11th Easter break, April 7th Ends April 21st | The subterranean settings of many Caravaggio paintings balance principally on lighted figures to carry the dramatic illumination of his compositions. Just how bright does he paint the flesh? And how much does his effect of illumination depend on its surrounding shadows? This course will encompass the following: - A close analysis of several Caravaggio paintings in detail; - An examination of the colors and values, including the creation of palettes based on specific paintings. - Use of these palettes in the execution of dramatically lit portraits from the model and self-portraits. A model will be present for part of the course. The model fee is included in the cost. This course will feature Williamsburg paints and emphasize the use of hog bristle and bull hair brushes of various sizes. Materials are not included in the cost and students are responsible for acquiring the materials indicated, though free samples of some Williamsburg colors will be offered at the start of the class. |
