5 Lectures, 7.5 hours total

Starts September 29th

Caravaggio was a master of composition in many ways. Not only did he carefully create his designs in terms of pictorial space and illusional space, but he would also give great importance to location (where the painting was intended to hang) and almost always used compositional devices as a means of enhancing–and in some cases, subverting–the implied narrative.

This course is made up of five lectures:

Lecture 1
Introduction to the Craft of Composition and Narrative + an examination of Caravaggio's Crucifixion of St. Peter.

Lecture 2
Excursion to see and sketch the Madonna di Loreto; return to the studio for an analysis and discussion of the composition.

Lecture 3
The Calling of Someone at the Table: a look at the Contarelli chapel paintings.

Lecture 4
The Conversion of Saul and a Game of Wit and Subversion

Lecture 5
Beheadings! David and Goliath and the Beheading of St. John the Baptist.

Materials are not included in the cost. All attendees are encouraged to bring a pencil and notebook.
