About Aesthetic Forum

Aesthetic Forum is conceived in spirit as an opportunity for professionals and hobbyists interested in a new and dynamic form of continuing education.

The goal is to bring painters together from all over the world and have a direct and constructive discussion about what they are doing, how they are doing it, and, perhaps most importantly, how success is measured, under the auspicious guidance of an exceptional painter and teacher like Charles Weed.

I hope you will join us for this exciting new initiative.

How It Works

Artists of Intermediate and Advanced levels are invited to participate in the first edition of Aesthetic Forum, a series of online interactive critiques led by the American painter Charles Weed in collaboration with the Painting & Drawing Art Studio of Rome.

Each Aesthetic Forum is limited to five Participants and is made up of four two-hour critiques held once every two weeks.

At the time of registration, each Participant may submit either one finished work or one work in progress—either a painting or a drawing or an etching—to be discussed in the first critique, after which the possibilities are:

  1. Submit the same work in progress for continued critique
  2. Submit a new work, again either finished or in-progress.

The first half of the critique will be spent looking at the body of the work; the second half will allow for specific questions from each of the Participants.

Want to Just Watch and Listen?

Testimonials: What Artists Are Saying about the Experience

The online critiques with Charles Weed and Tim Allen helped me progress my landscape paintings significantly over the period of the course. I felt supported and motivated to keep working on my landscapes in between sessions. I pushed myself and my paintings more than I would have had I been working on my own, and I built confidence in my painting as a result of the critiques and the progress I felt I was making.

I could directly implement the feedback right after the sessions, and I could go back to the critiques by way of replaying the videos, which was also very helpful. The input was applicable to all styles and types of subject matter, and I greatly benefited from the course. Also, hearing the critiques of the other students also helped progress my understanding of subject matters other than the ones I presented, such as still life, figure and portraiture. Thank you Charles and Tim!

Charles Weed is perceptive and articulate, erudite yet unpretentious.

For painters in a creative rut, or unsure of how to proceed with their art, Charles offers a reasoned perspective that will bring your focus back to picture-making.

Highly recommended!

Setting Expectations: Some Words from Charles Weed

Each of the four sessions will consist of a nuanced analysis of construction, value relationships, unity of effect, and color, particularly in its relationship to value.

There will first be a collective assessment of  all of the participants’ work, with common strengths and weaknesses addressed, and then each work will be discussed individually.

The critiques will be candid and constructive, focusing on concrete, useable information, always taking into account where I feel each participant is in his or her development.

Those of you looking for a unique interactive opportunity to continue your pictorial development within a community of like-minded peers might find this to be a good opportunity.”
